Freda O’Watch was born in Wolseley, SK on May 28, 1949 to Doug O’Watch and Velma Eashappie. Freda was one of the eldest of eight siblings.
She was predeceased by her husband Allan ‘Tubby’ Bellegarde; her parents Doug and Velma; brothers’ Dusty and Lester. Niece Crystal Saulteaux and grandson Woodrow.
She is survived by her siblings: Verna, Joe (Shawn), Wilbert (Brenda), Theresa, and Larron ‘beast’ (Chasity). Her children: Woodrow (Katie), Alvin ‘Barney’, Jackie (Darwin), Jaylene, and adopted daughter Ronda Tuckanow-Owatch. Grandchildren: Jody (Jesse), Reba, Kyrsten (Courage), Wilny (Melissa), Anthony, Kaylen, Jordee (Chantel), Harlee (April), Heather (Leo), Destin, and Lauren. Her great-grandchildren: Alayah, Katelyn, Connor, Victoria, Tallica, Kacey, Jansen, Ryen, Aubrey, and Nova. All of her great-grands held a special place in her heart.
Freda was known for her passion towards the Indigenous Nakota language of her tribe. She worked tirelessly to contribute her knowledge of the language with many projects, interviews and other materials. She enjoyed to teach, as well as practice her indigenous language. She promoted the importance of Nakota language to revitalize and retain resources by actively participating wherever possible. If she wasn't accompanied by her cousin Diane, she was usually in the company of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was rooted in the Indigenous way of life and spirituality. She attended many culture camps, First Nations ceremonies and conferences. She loved going to pow wows, camping out, travelling to rounddances, sundances, and other traditional events. Freda was a very strong Nakon Wiya who had touched many lives through ought the years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The wake will be held on January 4th, 2019 on Carry The Kettle First Nation at the Elder’s Lodge. The funeral Service will be held on January 5th, 2019 in Sintaluta, Sk. at the Sintaluta Memorial Hall.
