Grady Michael Lerat - Iron Thunderbird Coming Before The Rain

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Grady Michael Lerat (Iron Thunderbird Coming Before The Rain). Grady was born on February 29, 1960 and was called home to the Creator on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the age of 66 years.

He was predeceased by his parents Francis Norbert and Marie Antoinette Lerat; brothers: Clinton, Garnet, Glenn and Greg; sister Judy and his special niece Kara.

He is survived by his wife Sharon; loving daughters: Michelle (Patricia), Kelly, Nicole (Dustin) and Sydney (Chris); grandson Oliver; his sisters: Betty Ann, Susan, Debbie, Karen and Wendy; brother Gilbert; as well as numerous special nieces, nephews and cousins.

Grady was born in Broadview and was raised on the Cowessess First Nation. He attended school at Marieval, then continued schooling in Broadview. He furthered his education for two years at the University of Regina. While in university, his father Frankie trained him as a carpenter during the holidays and summer months. His love for the trade grew, where he soon decided to make it a full time career, owning his own construction business, Grade Ez Roofing and Renovations, for many years.

Grady, being committed to his community, served on Chief and Council for Cowessess First Nation. Serving as Councillor for 10 years, before being elected and serving a term as Chief. Grady spent his life in service of others and his community. He was passionate and committed to his culture. Being an oskapewis (elder’s helper), he was always helping in community events and ceremonies. Grady then spent his remaining years at Chief Red Bear Children’s Lodge as a Cultural Leader, helping to guide, advocate and share his teachings and knowledge.

The family would like to give their gratitude to the staff of Allan Blair Cancer Centre and Yorkton Regional Hospital for providing the best care and attention for Grady. He was deeply loved and supported by many people in the cultural community and the family would like to give special thanks to Owen, Mike and Joe.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., in the Cowessess First Nation Cultural Grounds, with select speakers speaking at 3:00 p.m. The family asks that you bring a lawn chair.
