It is with tremendous sadness we announce the passing of John Andrew Rygh, born July 21, 1934. John passed away with family at his side on Friday, October 30, 2026 in Broadview Centennial Lodge. John lived in the Broadview Centennial Lodge for the past few years and considered the staff and residents his family and friends. John’s family would like to thank the staff and residents for their kindness and caring. Family was everything to John and he left a lasting impression through his quiet kindness. He will be missed by all who knew him, but most of all by those who called him husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother and uncle.
John grew up and farmed north of Broadview, in the RM of Elcapo for over 40 years. He married the love of his life (Dorothy) Margaret McKinnon, on April 8, 1961 in St. Andrew’s Church in Broadview. John was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman. He was an active member of the Broadview Wildlife Federation for many years, serving at least one term as president. He enjoyed trips to hunt moose and deer and received many trophies for his successful hunts. He once had to shoot a black bear that repeatedly roamed through the yard where the children played. He loved fishing and attending and helping to organize fishing derbies. His family fondly remembers many fishing trips to northern Saskatchewan and the local lakes of the Qu’Appelle Valley. As a trapper he received high marks for the pelts he sold.
John was active on the Broadview Museum Board. Served on Wheat Pool board and Northwood Telephone company. He enjoyed curling and bowling for a time. He also taught downhill skiing so the whole family could enjoy the sport.
In 2002, John retired from farming and sold the farm. He and Margaret moved to town, bringing the house from the farm with them. A man who enjoyed doing things and being useful, he began a new career, working for several local RM’s as a pest control officer.
John’s loss will be deeply felt by his wife Margaret; his son Nelson (Darlene), grandchildren Kirsten (Cody) Horn and Riley (Megan) Rygh, great-grandchildren Odin, Emerson, Finnley and baby to arrive soon; his daughter Judy (Dan) Fafard, grandson Kurtis (Teri), great-grandchildren Wyatt and Levi and grandson Marc; his daughter Susan (Trevor) Obrigewitsch, granddaughter Stephanie (Nick) Pippin, great-granddaughter Serenity, grandsons Kyle and Bryton Winters and his great-grandson Sayber; his son Greg (Peggy), granddaughters Hunter and Brooke and Peggy’s children Colton, Chesney (Garrett), grandchildren Brynlee, Logan and Wyatt; his sister Alice Grummett and her daughter Charmaine and family; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and his many nieces and nephews, great and double-great.
John was predeceased by his parents Clara Mary (Gunderson) and Ole Engvlad Rygh; his sisters: Annie Halverson Bahr, Olga Sutherland, Clara Thrower, Beatrice Basick, Joyce Lund and Ruby Gray; his brother Ken; and their spouses, Bryton Winter and extended family.
A private family funeral will be held next summer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Broadview Centennial Lodge Renovation Fund, Box 849, Broadview, SK S0G 0K0.
