So Don, I'm going to tell you what I know... I know that today your were greeted at the pearly gates to heaven.  I know that I was extremely lucky to be a part of your world.  And I hope to see you again one day.   What over all of us. :)

Grandpa,
I have so many wonderful memories with you. One of my particular favorites was when I was about 5 or 6. We were up at the cabin and we had just finished swimming. I was so bored. Since I was so young I wanted to go and do something really fun. I begged you to take me for a ride in the bug. You finally agreed. I raced out of the cabin and waited while you pulled out of the garage. I jumped in, and I could barely sit still while my mom helped buckle me in. Then we started driving down the dirt road. I remember feeling so grown up because I got to sit in the front seat, which wasn't really a front seat considering the fact that there were only two seats. I also remember feeling so special because  it was just you and me. I never wanted that ride to end. I miss and love you so much Grandpa.

From the first time Roger invited me over to your house for supper (1983) to one of your last days in the hospital, YOU always made me feel welcome and apart of your family. There was always a kiss and a hug  when I arrived and the same when I left. Lots of memories ..the one that comes to mind was when Roger and I were dating and I was going to beauty school downtown St. Paul.  Rog had surgery and was at one of the hospitals downthere.  After school I walked over to visit him.  Rog and I lost track of time and noticed the buses weren't running anymore and to top it off it had snowed about 3 inches..WHO KNOWS WHAT WE WERE DOING?? lol :) Don, you called to see how Rog was doing and heard that I was stranded downtown at the hospital and volunteered to pick me up and take me home. I was living with my sister Jan in Newport at the time. I was kinda of nervous about the long ride home!!  What would I say, what would you say?  I thanked you over and over again for picking me up, and then you asked me a question that you continued to ask me over the 35 years when we see each other. "So Cathie, what do you know?" I hope I got better at answering that question over the years!!! LOL

Greetings from Florida!
 Because of so many miles of travel, I will not be able to be with you for Don’s celebration of life.   I do, however, have fond memories of my last time with him.  We had not been together for many years, but he came to the birthday celebration of my dad and aunt last summer.   I remembered Don as a warm and gracious person,  and last summer I found the same person. On this Super Bowl Sunday it is so fitting to remember and appreciate a truly super person.  God bless him and you all!

One of my favorite memories of you was when I was fourteen, and I was at home over winter break.  You came over and out of the blue said "Okay Collin, let's go."  I didn't know where you were taking me or what we were doing, but I got in the car.  When we pulled into the State Fair Grounds, I was confused.  When you explained that you were going to let me drive around, I was a little nervous, but really excited since this was the first time I had ever been behind the wheel.  I remember doing loops around the parking lot for close to 45 minutes before we started making our way around the rest of the streets on the grounds.  We must have driven for close to an hour and a half before we headed over to a McDonald's afterwards, and just talked for a while.  I just thought that was the coolest thing ever that you did that.  We are all going to miss you Grandpa.

I remember back to the days when I was much younger when I would bike over to your house to talk with you.  I would sit in your office for hours and listen to your stories, and you would listen to everything that I had to say as well.  I remember when I used to play sports during high school, and I could always count on you trying to come out and see me play.  I will miss your interest in everything going on in my life, and I know that you were truly proud of the entire family.  You are always in our hearts.

There a too many memories for me to choose from for one memory. I will cherish all the times at the lake sitting in front of a fire, grabbing fire crackers out of the old tackle box, and sleep overs watching Pinocchio/Star Trek and eating gram crackers and milk.

My most sincere condolences to the Pangell family.  My heart goes out to you all, especially my dear friend Suzie.  I came to know Don thru my childhood friendship with his oldest daughter.  I enjoyed countless sleepover weekends at the Pangell home as well as many week long visits to the cabin.  I was always in awe of the meticulous workshop Don maintained in the family home.  His level of organization is by far the most impressive I've ever witnessed.  Don also set a high bar in the fatherhood department and was a role model for others in the way he provided loving, practical guidance to his children (and their friends).  He didn't mince words - you got it straight but it was from the heart.  I'll miss you Don but you'll forever be in my memories. I will always miss the time you called to just shoot the breeze and to make sure I was doing alright. I remember you saying how excited you will be when I called and told you that when Annie and I were expecting but we won't get the chance to have that talk. I promise that I will pass down the skills you taught my Mom from carving fish to building a perfect fire. I will miss the late night talks over the phone or as we sat at a fire at the lake. I'll miss our favorite foods that we had from head cheese to fried SPAM sandwiches. Most of all I will miss the sound of your voice checking up on me at night.

I'm going to miss you more than you will ever know. I will miss your big hugs and I will miss the love you had for our family. I will miss the conversations we always had together and how proud you were of all of us. I will miss staying the night your house and waking up in the morning to you sitting in your office watching TV and hearing The Andy Griffith theme song. I will miss our many trips to Subway and how you would always use your pocket knife to cut off half and save it for later. I will miss when you always called me "sweets". Dear grandpa Don

It's hard to just pick one memorie. When I've had so many good ones. Some of my favorite times was when we would all go up to the cabin with all the families. You and grandma would take everyone out to the village scoop let us all get ice cream and pick out a toy. Go back to the cabin tell us bout your fishing up there watch us fish. Just sitting around the camp fire at night roasting us marshmallows and just having alot of laughs. Waking up have one good breakfast grandma could make. Then going home and couldn't wait till we all got to go back up to do it all over again. You will be truly missed love you

One thing I absolutely adored about Grandpa Don was the hugs. There was always one waiting for you when you arrived and always one before you left. He never missed a birthday. Usually it was just a simple call and he would always ask the same question "So do you feel any older?" I will miss that tradition most. Growing up  with  Grandpa Don there are so many memories it's hard to know which to begin with? So many holidays and sleepovers spent at their house in West Lakeland.  Fall was always a favorite time of year for me because we would all go over to his house to help rake millions of leaves, I more so  watched then actually raked. It's the thought that counts right?   We also, had many summer weekends at the cabin swimming,  sitting around the fire, and going fishing.  Grandpa could clean a fish in a flash.  In recent years being able to celebrate my Grandparents 50th wedding  anniversary is a testament  that faith, endless love and support is something that you work for everyday. I will carry those same values in my marriage and hope it to lasts 50 years.  Grandpa will live on in our hearts and be celebrated every year as he shares the same birthday as my son Hunter. I will be sure to always light a candle for you.

My condolence to the Pangell family for your loss. I have many great memories of Don when he worked as one of the Bremer statement stuffer gang. Great conversations and laughs I/we had with Don. He was such a nice person. Always wanted to know how you were doing. He would enlighten us all with stories of his days in banking & other activities.  He was very proud of his family. He will be missed. Thanks for the memories Don!
