Martin Edward Blyth was born on February 6,1944 in London to Florence and Edward Blyth. Inquisitive and studious as a child, he was rarely seen without book in his hand. Still, growing up with two brothers made for plenty of fun times as well – playing solders on the postwar streets of London or riding self-made roller skates or bicycles on the busy city roads. He loved sketching and drawing, and at the age of 17, his exceptional talents landed him his first job as a junior draftsman for a company designing British exhibition pavilions for the World Trade fairs. It was an exciting experience for young Martin; one which took him to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Russia, and East and West Germany, creating many funny, and a few not-so-funny, stories which he loved to share over the years. During this same time, he managed to put himself through years of school, graduating with an MBA and a Masters in Civic Engineering. In 1966 he began working for 3M in the marketing department of the Abrasives and Chemicals group, and progressed to General Marketing Manager of the Industrial Chemical business in UK and Chemicals Product Manager in Brussels, Belgium. In 1984 he moved to Minnesota and continued his career working at 3M headquarters in the Protective Materials division promoting the Scotchgard brand across the globe. He work very hard, but he loved what he was doing, and along the way he made many lifelong friends – some even as close as family. He retired from the company as a Scotch-Guard Brand Manager in 2003. After retirement, he traded his tie and briefcase for jeans and suitcase and continued to travel the world over, including thousands of miles on his favorite motorcycle exploring the beauty of the United States. He was kind and loving, and cared deeply for his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by many, around the globe.
Throughout his life, Martin gave generously to numerous charities financially and with his time and his talents. Dear to his heart was Achieving Cures Together, and in lieu of flowers, if you’d care to make a donation in his name, please follow the link below.
