Samuel Harder

of Woodbury, Minnesota

Passed away at 12:30 am on Thursday, March 20, 2014. He was born November 10, 1931, on the farm of his parents, Peter and Katharina (Loewen) Harder, near Waldheim, Saskatchewan. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in Pharmacy in 1956, and married Hazel Marion Patterson (died May 13, 2009) the following year. Sam worked in the pharmaceutical industry in Montreal before going to Nigeria in 1961 with the Presbyterian Church Missions to set up and run the pharmacy at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Umuahia, Nigeria. Afterwards he returned to the University of Saskatchewan to earn his PhD. in Pharmacy. While pursuing his degree, he returned to Nigeria with the Red Cross to help provide humanitarian aid during the civil war that was raging there. After graduating in 1970, he again moved to Montreal to pursue his career in research and development in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1978, he accepted a position with the Ortho division of Johnson and Johnson and moved to Branchburg, New Jersey. In 1985, he moved to Woodbury, Minnesota, to join the Riker Laboratories division of 3M, from where he retired in 1996. Very active in the church in whichever community he was residing, Sam was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Woodbury. Sam is survived by his six brothers and sisters: Ethel Wiens, Arthur Harder, Harry Harder, Reneta Dickman, Earl Harder, and Vernon Harder; three children: Ellen Campbell (Peter) of Ottawa, Ontario, Graeme Harder (Nita) of South St. Paul, and Philip Harder (AmyJo) of Woodbury; five grandchildren: Alison Campbell, Susan Ould-Brahim (Nazim), Robert Campbell, Samuel Harder II, and Owen Harder; and two great-grandchildren: Saphia and Rayanne Ould-Brahim. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the charity of your choice. Sam was active with so many charities it is impossible for the family to choose just one. Service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Woodbury at 2:00pm on Saturday, March 29, 2014.
