Age 95 of Oak Park Heights, MN
Passed away peacefully on 12/30/2017.
Willard was the son of Elwood and Charlotte Carmean of Snow Hill, Maryland and was preceded in death by his sister, Mary, of Salisbury, Maryland. He is survived by children, Kim, Kelli and Charles; grandchildren, Linnea, Margot, and Claire.
Will was raised in Pennsylvania, and served in France and Germany as a platoon leader with the 14th Armored Division. He earned his undergraduate forestry degree at Penn State, and his M.F. and Ph.D. in forest soils and silviculture at Duke. Will had a long and distinguished career with the Forest Experiment Station of the U.S. Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest, Ohio, Illinois and Minnesota, and served with United Nations Development Programs in Haiti, Greece, Turkey, and Malaysia. In 1979 he joined the Faculty of Forestry at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. During Will's time in Thunder Bay, he spearheaded the preservation of a 2,000- acre old growth white pine forest at Greenwood Lake.
He will be greatly missed by his family and his profession.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30PM Tuesday, 1/2/18 at Boutwells Landing, 5600 Norwich Parkway, Oak Park Heights, MN.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Lakeview Hospice.
