Daphne was born on March 15th, 1924 to the late Walter and Daisy Weatherman of Bronx, New York. She was an only child and was doted upon all the time - especially by her father, Walter (she was daddy’s girl!). Having been born and raised in NYC – Daphne was a classic New Yorker through and through, but there was no mistaking her Jamaican roots. Those of us who were fortunate to know her knew she loved everything Jamaican, especially the warm weather year round.
After high school, she furthered her education and became a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist. She was extremely health conscious years before healthy eating became an accepted mainstream option and she continued to eat healthy her entire life.
Daphne worked as a Dietitian Nutritionist at the New York City Department of Health. One day while walking down the hall at her work place, she was accidentally bumped into by a tall young man. The young man apologized profusely for running into her and said he was new there and was looking for a particular office. Daphne showed him where the office was and that accidental “bump” led to the matrimony of Daphne C. Weatherman and Alphonza Richard Ferguson in July of 1957.
A couple of years later they welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Robert A. Ferguson, and he became the pride and joy of the loving couple. Much like Daphne’s parents were to her, she doted on her only child. Daph and AL were fantastic parents; doing all the things mothers and fathers should do. The family did everything together. She enjoyed 53 years of marriage before her husband Al preceded her in life.
Besides enjoying her family, she was an avid bridge player. She and her husband were members of the Bayview Bridge Club of East Elmhurst and participated in many bridge tournaments over the years. Daphne loved flowers and she certainly had the greenest of green thumbs but she never let grass grow under her feet! Daphne was always on the go and she loved to “celebrate!” - holidays, birthdays - any occasion. When there was nothing to celebrate… She was infamous for celebrating “just to celebrate”! She loved to travel and continued to travel to Jamaica every chance she got… it was always a celebration!
Daphne C. Ferguson is now in the arms of loved ones who have preceded her in death and bringing many smiles to their faces: her loving husband Alphonza Richard Ferguson, mother Daisy Weatherman, father Walter Weatherman, cousin Monica Jones and other family members.
Daph leaves to cherish her memories: Her loving son and daughter-in-law Robert and Mona Ferguson along with her grandson Nolan Ferguson. Daphne will be greatly missed by her sister-in-law Rosalee Singleton and her cousins Marjorie “Madge” Johnson and Garland Dwyer. Also, a nephew Louis Cookley II and wife Pat and her three nieces Cynthia Cookley, Vivian Alderfer and husband Mark, and Paulette Cookley Rivas, four grandnieces Patricia Cookley, Jade Walker, Sarah Alderfer, and Somanette Rivas, a grandnephew Louis Cookley III, three step grand children Natesha Pickett, Tonisha Gilmore and Rayvon Phillips, and one great grandnephew Nicolas Sullivan.
She will be deeply missed by her lifelong friends Eva Deleon and Hazel Sobers and family. Eva and Hazel were like sisters to her.
