I have known Diego for almost 17 years, throughout that time he has been my most reliable and loyal friend.   From taking care of my dog to delivering an amazing speech at my wedding he would always be there for you when you needed him the most.   

Diego is a modern day renaissance man, he builds his own furniture, cooks amazing meals, and plays musical instruments.  I wish I took more time to appreciate him when I had the opportunity to.  I will miss him greatly... 



I met Diego through my friend Stephanie, who used to work with him. He quickly became a staple of our Astoria apartment. He was always down to whip us up a meal or go on an adventure with us. He celebrated our roommate Christmas’s with us, always showing up with the most ridiculous gifts (cue: make your own dog tags) wrapped in the most innovative ways (he once went into a pizza shop and bought pizza boxes to put under the tree).  Diego was thoughtful and kind and so caring. As much as he loved to maintain his “metal” exterior, put him in a room with a cat and he turned into a real softie! He loved his family and his friends to the core, and I’m lucky to have called myself his friend.

There are so many things that come to mind when I think of Diego but one thing I’ll share is what an awesome chef he was. I feel fortunate my friends and I had the opportunity to cook with him many times. We would always ask him to make his famous pico de gallo for us and he’d usually oblige as an opportunity to flex his killer knife skills. We even created fake cooking competitions in my Astoria apartment and Diego would always get the highest scores for plating. For someone with a seemingly tough exterior, he worked delicately and meticulously. I remember once he had forgotten to use rosemary in his dish (it was part of the “competition” to use it) and he quickly created rosemary caramel sauce that he served over ice cream. We looked at him in amazement as he pulled it all together in 5 minutes. So creative and truly one of a kind. I miss you so much my friend. 

I met Diego over a decade ago at an internship at a corporate company. He was the tech guy who helped me get my computer set up, and we immediately bonded over our mutual interest in metal music and similar styles of humor. After the internship ended we remained friends,  going to metal shows together and grabbing a beer when we got the chance. He wore black all the time and listened to angry music. He was also an incredibly kind, understanding person who you could count on for support when you needed it. Diego and his loved ones are in my heart. Rest In Peace, man.
