Of British origin but at heart very much from Jackson Heights, 96-year-old Joan Mary Dunn, passed away at her home on Sunday, August 3rd. Joan was a long-time member of the Daughters of the British Empire. Joan retired from BP after many years of service. She was a dedicated member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Jackson Heights as well as St. James' Episcopal Church in Manhattan. At St. James' Church, she was a beloved Sunday School teacher for 18 years, a member of the Welcome and Pastoral Committee as well as Chair of the Lay Visitors Committee. During her years at St. Mark’s, she was involved in different ministries, from the altar guild to hospitality, serving as an usher and as a reader, while also volunteering in the food pantry. An acolyte who served with Joan remembers her this way: “Joan was the best of us. Her dedicated service to the Altar Guild was a model of modest, humble work in support of sacred space. She was always there, always faithful to the mission of the guild. It was an honor to work with her.”
Joan was beloved by many, not only for having lived in the neighborhood for more than half a century but also for her friendly demeanor, charming accent, and sweet disposition. Friends, parishioners and neighbors alike will remember her affability and her gentleness.
