May 4, 1932 – March 6, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Raúl de Jesús Arbelaez Mejía, who departed peacefully on March 6, 2026, at the age of 93.
Raúl was born in Rionegro, Colombia, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He lived a long and meaningful life and was known for his charm, humor, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He took immense pride in his family and cherished every moment spent with them.
Raúl attended the Montreal Institute for the Deaf and Mute, where he pursued his education and formed lifelong connections. He later became a pioneer within the Colombian deaf community in New York City, and over the decades helped many deaf individuals and families from Colombia navigate their path to immigrating to the United States, just as he once did.
An explorer at heart, Raúl traveled to many parts of the world and embraced life with curiosity and adventure. He had a deep passion for photography and videography and meticulously documented many moments and milestones throughout his life, preserving memories that will continue to live on for generations.
Raúl was preceded in death by his beloved parents, aunts, and sisters, whom he now rejoins in eternal rest.
He is survived by his loving wife, children, and grandson, whom we are eternally grateful he was able to meet and form a beautiful and loving bond with.
A funeral service will be held in Medellín, Colombia, where family and friends will gather to celebrate his life and say their final goodbyes.
Though he will be deeply missed, we take comfort in knowing he lived a long and beautiful life and is now resting in peace, free from suffering and watching over those who loved him. His legacy of resilience, love for his family, and adventurous spirit will live on through all who knew him.
