Walter Patrick Nullet, “The Captain” 68, of Chesapeake, passed away peacefully at home, February 20, 2025. Formerly of Freeport, New York, he was the son of Janet Kvanvik Nullet and the late Walter John Nullet. Walter was a lifelong adventurer, devoted mariner, and beloved family member. He lived life with an energy, passion, and curiosity that knew no bounds—whether navigating the open seas, tending his garden, or serving up a feast in his kitchen, he approached everything with an unstoppable drive for the best of the best. Walter’s love for the water started young, shaped by his time with the Junior Navy ROTC and working on fishing boats off the coast of Freeport. These early experiences set the course for his remarkable career at sea. After graduating from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, he embarked on a career of global adventure, sailing the world with the Military Sealift Command, forging lifelong friendships, and immersing himself in the cultures of every port he visited. A proud Navy Reserve veteran, Walter’s dedication to the maritime life was unmatched; he rocketed to the rank of Captain at just 29 years old. But Walter was not just an explorer of the oceans; he was an explorer of life itself, always chasing the next great experience. If something could be done better, he would find a way. When he decided he needed the perfect pizza crust, he shipped an entire pizza oven from overseas. When he wanted the finest olive oil, he had it shipped from a family friend in Greece—because why settle for less? His culinary adventures were just as bold as his sea voyages, and if you were lucky enough to sit at his table, you were guaranteed an unforgettable meal, filled with laughter and a glass of something exceptional. Walter’s sense of humor was as sharp as his instincts at sea. He had a knack for turning everyday moments into something special. His legendary storytelling left people hanging on every word. When home from sea and during retirement, his garden was his sanctuary; a place where he poured his energy into perfection—growing, cultivating, and nurturing with the same passion he had for everything else in life. He leaves behind a legacy of adventure, laughter, and an unrelenting pursuit of life’s finest experiences. His stories, his spirit, and his infectious joy will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Janet; brothers, Lawrence Nullet, Douglas Nullet (Gina) and Joseph Nullet (Trina); five nephews, Albert, Dominic, Joseph (Ashley), Luke and Nick; his partner in life, Damian J. (DJ) Hansen; and a host of close friends.
