

Herman “Red” Slater, age 78, of Woodstock, Georgia passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018.
Red was one of six children born to the late J.C. Slater and Vera Mae Andrews Slater. He resided in Northeast Georgia until moving to Florida in 1957. In the 60’s, Red began his career as a firefighter. He specialized in handling and disarming explosives and had many near death experiences to serve his community. After retiring in 1985, Red came back to his roots in Northeast Georgia. He began to volunteer for the local fire station and work the concession stand and as gate keeper for little league and football. Red had a talent working on engines and spent countless hours tinkering on lawn mowers, antique cars and repairing bikes for the neighborhood children.
Red is preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Vera Mae Slater; daughter, Mona Slater; and sisters, Revonda Nell Slater and Lou Edna Ginn.
His memory will be cherished by his wife of 41 years, Josephine Slater of Woodstock, Georgia; son, Michael Slater and his wife, Jenny, of Canton, Georgia; daughters, Pamela Slater Harris, Sondra Slater and Diane Barnett all of Florida; siblings, Claudia Hamby of Augusta, Georgia, Frank Slater of Hartwell, Georgia and Delma Keese of South Carolina; grandchildren, Robbie Allen, Jessica Petty, Sommer Knight, Lauren Peterson, Andrew Tokarski, Mackenzie Slater and Morgan Slater; and 3 great-grandchildren.
