Originally of Erie, Pennsylvania, Jack had lived in Woodstock, Georgia, since the early 1990s.
Jack graduated from Academy High School in 1942. He served in World War II as Army Staff Sergeant in France, Germany and northern Africa, leading troops into the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton's Third Army.
Jack retired after many years as an engineer from Hammermill Paper Company. As a young father of two girls, Jack also served as deacon and trustee at Sarah Hearn Memorial Presbyterian Church in Erie.
Jack was a good man who always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye, especially for his family. He believed and modeled many virtues including love, devotion, patience, and the value of family. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his family as his girls were growing up. He spent endless hours teaching them to ride bikes, fish, how to drive and taking them to the local beach and the zoo to feed the wild animals. It was important to Jack that his girls experience all the things he loved growing up in Erie.
Jack loved and cared for his wife, Jean, until she died in 2014. They had been married for more than 68 years. After her death, Jack often told his family how much he loved and missed Jean and that she "was the only girl for me."
Jack is preceded in death by his wife Louise "Jean" Hartwell; parents Foy and Agnes Hartwell; brothers George, Charles and William Hartwell; sister Joan Hartwell; and son-in-law Ralph Walker. Survivors include daughters Linda (Hartwell) Walker of Canton, Georgia; Ginger (Hartwell) Michaels and husband Robert of Tempe, Arizona; grandchildren Elizabeth Walker of Brevard, North Carolina; Joseph Michaels and Alexander Michaels both of Tempe, Arizona; and Christopher Walker of Dahlonega, Georgia; sister-in-law Jo Ella (Wilson) Nashadka of Alameda, California; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia at a later date.
Donations may be made in Jack's memory to the American Heart Association.
