J.W. Gainey

Mr. John William Gainey, Sr, 82, of Woodstock, GA passed away October 1, 2020. J.W. was born on November 23, 1937 in Hartsville, SC to the late Carl and Margaret Gainey. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina, and remained an avid Gamecocks fan throughout his life.

J.W. enjoyed a long career with Sonoco Products Co initially as an Industrial Engineer and quickly advancing to Plant Manager and finally as an Area Financial Controller. Some of his many hobbies included fishing, hunting and watching Gamecock football and women’s basketball. He was a devoted family man and would be there for all of his children and grandchildren’s sporting events. J.W. was a devoted husband and father and a doting grandfather. He was very easy going, but when he had an opinion on something, he would not hesitate to share it. Those lucky enough to have known J.W. will deeply miss him.

Left to cherish his memory are sons, John Gainey Jr. (Loretta) and Todd Gainey; daughters, Kim Norland and Debbie Herbert (Tim); 10 grandchildren, Byron, Jacob, Brian, Jonathan, Jessica, Daniel, Austin, Garrett, Tasha and Taylor; 5 great-grandchildren (Rosie, Maddison, Makinley, Jayden & Jacob); and sisters, Lu Lu and Mena. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deanne Gainey.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at 11:00am in the chapel of Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main St, Woodstock, GA 30188. J.W. will be laid to rest at Georgia Memorial Park, 2000 Cobb Pkwy SE, Marietta, GA 30060.
