Phella Sue Jones Prosch, age 89, of Canton, Georgia, formerly of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2018. Mrs. Prosch was born to the late James Henry Jones and late Lela Mae Daniels Jones on December 7, 1928 in Montgomery, Alabama. She was the youngest of five daughters who were more affectionately known as "the Jones girls" to their community.
She was a graduate of Howard College with a Bachelor of Arts in Drama. While in college, she was the women’s basketball free throw champion, was selected to the conference All Star Women’s Basketball team, was head cheerleader, pledged Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and served as Senior Senate Member of her student government comity.
Known for her dramatic skills, she both sold a ticket to, and performed for British actor John Loder (former husband of Heddy Lamar) in “The Importance of Being Ernest” where she starred as Gwendolen. In addition to performing in a number of productions she served as President of Masquers, the dramatic society of Howard College.
Early on she pursued a promising acting career. Sacrificially, she abandoned that pursuit for her family. She consciously chose to invest in the future of those she loved instead of pursuing her own more easily recognized achievements. Mrs. Prosch was blessed with four children, Tres, Kevin, Reneé and Rebecca, in laws she loved as if they were her own, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She always encouraged her loved ones to develop their God-given talents and use them for His glory. She lived to see her legacy of love for the arts, dance, music, as well as acting continue through her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Prosch was so proud of her family and loved them with a loyalty that never wavered. Her greatest desire for them, as well as for all she knew was that they know the joy of sins forgiven accompanied by a life of fellowship and service for the one who loved us unto death, Jesus Christ. She always had a particular passion for the salvation of the Jewish people.
Myriads were touched by the loving sacrifice and wisdom of this woman. She became “mother” to many beyond her family - “Greater love has no one than this; to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:13)”.
Mrs. Prosch was preceded in death by her son, Gus Joseph Prosch (Tres) III; parents, James Henry Jones and Lela Mae Daniels Jones; sisters, Katherine (Dean) Jones Sauls and her husband Barney, Emma Claire Jones Barnes and her husband Hobert and Jimmie Louise Jones Ashworth and her husband Carey; brother in law, Dr. Mac Owens; and precious grand and great-grand babies.
Her memory will live on with her son, Charles Kevin Prosch; daughters, Reneé Prosch Horne and her husband Rev. Wesley N. Horne Jr.; and Rebecca Jean Prosch; daughter in love, Jill W. Prosch; grandchildren, Stephannie Prosch Drees, Nathanael Prosch, Haley Prosch Stoll, Aron Prosch, Jonathan Wesley Horne and his wife Laura Bowen Horne, Victoria Renee Horne and her husband Daniel R.
