Robert (Bob) Hunter Atha, 65, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on March 31, 2026, at home, surrounded by family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 22, 1960, in Marietta, Ohio, Bob lived his life as a true Buckeye and as an exceptional husband, father, son, brother, and friend. He approached life with energy, resilience, and a deep appreciation for every moment he was given.
From an early age, Bob stood out as a natural athlete. At Worthington High School, he excelled in football, basketball, and track, but it was football that captured his heart. That passion led him to The Ohio State University, where he joined the team as a preferred walk-on in 1978. It did not take long for his talent to speak for itself. Under Coach Woody Hayes, Bob earned his place and became known for his versatility and reliability. From 1978 to 1981, he filled multiple roles as a kicker, punter, quarterback, and occasional wide receiver, always ready to step in wherever he was needed. He still holds a share of the record for most field goals in a game, a mark that has been matched but never surpassed.
After his collegiate career, Bob was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and later spent time with the Miami Dolphins. Even beyond football, his athletic ability remained evident. He was an exceptional golfer, playing at a level few achieve, and approached the game with both natural talent and precision. He was also an avid fisherman, always having a fishing pole in his truck, ready to “wet a line” whenever. Some of his most cherished time was spent in Northern Michigan, where he loved fishing, taking in the fresh air and natural beauty, and being surrounded by family.
When his football career came to an end, Bob turned that same drive and discipline toward his work in the oil and gas industry. He carried forward a proud multigenerational family legacy while also building one of his own. He loved what he did and worked tirelessly, bringing the same hard work, determination, and passion to his career that he brought to every aspect of his life.
What truly set Bob apart, however, was not only what he accomplished, but also how he lived. He had a natural warmth that drew people in. Conversations with him were easy, genuine, and memorable. He never met a stranger, and he had a way of making people feel like they mattered.
His faith in Christ was the cornerstone of his life. It guided him in how he treated others and carried him through his illness with remarkable strength. He faced each day with courage and without complaint, trusting in something greater than himself. Even in his hardest moments, he continued to share that faith with others.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Howard Dell Atha and Yvonne Thompson Atha; his brothers, William Atha and David Atha; and his niece, Chelsea Atha. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Lauren Atha Skinner, Hunter Atha (Matt), and Tanner Atha (Brooks); grandson, Bentley Skinner; siblings Nancy (Joe) Melville, Richard (Diana) Atha, Tom (Cindy) Atha; Sister-in-laws Julia Atha and Gay Atha.
The family is deeply grateful for the support of their friends and loved ones throughout this journey. They extend special thanks to Dr. Peter Kourlas and to OhioHealth Hospice, who helped support Carol in achieving their goal of caring for him at home.
The family has chosen to forgo calling hours as they grieve privately. A graveside service will be held for immediate family only. A Celebration of Life will be planned for this summer and will be open to all who knew and loved Bob.
He lived with strength, he loved without reservation, and he never stopped fighting.
