After high school Mary worked as a bank teller for 3rd National Bank in Dayton, Ohio. Dayton is where she met her husband Thomas, and they married on September 12, 1959. In 1962 they built a home in New Carlisle, Ohio, where they lived for fifty-four years. While Mary enjoyed working at the bank her dream was to be a mother and homemaker. For years she grew a large garden and canned produce. Mary was an excellent cook and was known for her hot-lite rolls and rhubarb pie. She was an accomplished seamstress and tailor and ran her own sewing business making dresses, costumes for the theater, performers, and parades. She traveled around the country with family and friends attending sewing conventions to learn new skills. Mary also loved knitting and crochet. She taught beginning through advanced classes at local community centers and was often sought out to make unique items and draft patterns. In her later years, Mary made infant hats, sweaters, and booties for family and friends, hats for the homeless, and various items for fundraising events and local charities.
Mary will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband Thomas Moody, daughter Rebecca Shuter (Matthew), sisters Delores Huffman and Laura Lee Cane (Ron), brother Michael (Cathy) Fitzwater, and several nieces and nephews. There will be a remembrance dinner for family and close friends. The family requests that those wishing to make contributions in Mary’s memory do so to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
