Shelby was born on December 19, 1989, to Dean and Rori McDonald. She grew up in Worthington, Ohio, along with her older sister Kailee and attended Worthington Kilbourne High School, graduating as Valedictorian. She was a bright and charismatic girl who brought smiles to those around her.
As a young child, Shelby was diagnosed with Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T), a rare genetic neurological disorder that affects motor movement, speech, and the immune system. While the trajectory of her diagnosis was not an easy one, Shelby was fiercely determined and did not let its progression or the physical challenges that came with it keep her from living an independent life as an adult on her own terms. In fact, she lived her life in a way that many would have said was impossible, but not for Shelby. Her strength and resilience were an inspiration to those around her and a blessing to those who loved her.
Shelby was a loyal and loving daughter, sister, and friend who was always willing to listen and wanted nothing more than for those she loved to be happy, regardless of what she was facing in her own life. She stood up for the things she believed in and was not afraid to speak her mind. Her friends and family knew they could count on her for advice and valued her unique perspective and wisdom. Shelby also loved to laugh and make others laugh – her sense of humor and infectious laugh will be deeply missed. She had a special ability to connect with children, especially her nieces, which they will lovingly remember as they grow older.
Shelby took pride in being a companion and capable caregiver to her dogs and never wanted to be without them. They were part of her family and took care of her as much as she took care of them. Her dog of 15 years, Chance, was by her side at the time of her passing.
Shelby is survived by her father, Dean McDonald; her sister, Kailee (Terence) Balagia; her grandfather, Terry Hansley; and her two nieces.
Shelby was preceded in death by her mother, Rori McDonald; her grandfather, Patrick McDonald; her grandmother, Carol McDonald; and her grandmother, Rochelle Hansley.
Visitation and a moment of remembrance service will be held on July 27 from 2-4 PM at Schoedinger Worthington, 6699 N High St, Worthington, OH 43085. The moment of remembrance service will begin at 3 PM.
