William Cain passed away peacefully surrounded by family in the early hours of January 14, 2025. Born on January 22, 1942, in Columbus, OH, he was the beloved son of the late Robert F. and Barbara L. (Reichert) Cain.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Gerry (Belasky) Cain, whom he first met in the 6th grade at St. James the Less School. He was a devoted father and grandfather to Dr. Tim and his children with Julie, Simon (Courtney) and Andy; Laurie (Tom Schneider) and their daughter Anna; Dr. Sean (Renee) and their children Ella, Ethan, and Kaitlyn; and Brian (Lacey), and their children, Sarah, Emily, and Brady. He is survived by his sister, Martha and predeceased by his "Brother Bob" (Marilyn), and lifelong dear friends Pete and Linda Giuliani.
Bill graduated from St. Charles Preparatory School before dedicating over 35 years to F&R Lazarus as a delivery driver. Not yet ready to retire, he worked another 20 years driving a school bus for Dublin City Schools, where he was cherished by the children, who affectionately called him “Mr. Bill.”
When asked about his greatest accomplishment, Bill always said it was his children and grandchildren, though he credited his wife, Gerry, for all the hard work. Together, they were equal partners, modeling what it meant to be dedicated parents and people of faith. He always made time to attend the events of his children and grandchildren, from soccer games to dance performances and music recitals. Even when his work schedule prevented him from attending an entire event, he was known to stop by a game in his delivery truck or school bus to be present for as much time as he could.
With a nod to his heritage – especially his grandfather and his dad “Pappy” – Bill was an avid gardener and handyman finding joy in planting flowers each spring and tackling the next home improvement project. In retirement he enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and breakfast buddy Wayne Blind. Even when his health was declining, his dedicated caretakers at Danbury of Westerville – Asha, Harriet, and Hannah –remarked that he always brought joy to others with his good humor and kindness.
Bill will be forever remembered for his wisdom, laughter and unwavering commitment to his entire family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his memory.
Family and friends may call upon Bill’s family on Sunday, January 19, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Schoedinger Worthington.
