William “Bill” Edwin Wedd, age 75, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024. He was born September 27, 1948, in Akron, Ohio to the late Ralph and Jacqueline Wedd. Bill is survived by son Alan (Meghan) Wedd, his siblings Beth Petty, Jim (Joanie Knapke) Wedd, Patty (Will) Crowther, and Tom (Luanne McElheney) Wedd, along with other dear family and friends.
Bill grew up in Akron, Ohio, where he developed a lifelong love of sports, music, and literature. After graduating from Buchtel High School in 1966, Bill attended Dennison University for two years, before transferring to the University of Akron. In college, Bill continued to pursue his passions by playing and recording music, participating in intermural sports, and completing a degree in English Literature in 1971. Bill also formed close relationships in college, not only meeting friends that lasted the rest of his life, but also meeting his wife Alice.
In 1970, Bill entered in to matrimony with Alice, a union that brought over 40 years of marriage and one child in to their lives. Though life ultimately took them on separate paths, the shared joys and challenges of raising a family together remained a significant part of Bill’s journey in life.
After college, Bill had a long career in sales, including owning a business that sold reading materials to schools across the country. He also continued to enjoy the hobbies cultivated in his youth. Bill was a prolific reader, averaging approximately two fiction books per week for most of his adult life. He also continued to write, record, and listen to music throughout his life, and was a loyal fan of Cleveland sports teams during both their (brief) periods of success and (extended) periods of mediocrity.
Bill was an active member of the twelve step recovery community for over twenty years. He found strength, support, spiritual growth, and transformation through the principles of his community, and was a testament to the both power of resilience, and the ability to overcome personal challenges. Bill also dedicated his life to supporting others in their journey to sobriety, and was always willing to extend a helping hand to those seeking guidance on the path to recovery.
Bill will be remembered for his enduring traits. He was kind and compassionate, always willing to offer words of comfort and encouragement to others. His intelligence enriched the lives of those around him with calm insight and thoughtful perspectives, and his honesty created a foundation of trust in all of his relationships. Additionally, Bill’s sense of humor brought joy to many of his interactions, and will be a cherished part of his legacy.
Family will receive friends Saturday, February 10, 2024, from 12-2PM at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 6699 N. High Street, with a memorial service to follow at 2PM. Please share a memory or send condolences to Bill’s family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to GiveWell, a charity close to Bill’s heart.
