Carol Aliene (Melton) Sharp was born May 12, 1935, in Yakima Washington. She passed away on December 29, 2023, at Landmark Care Center in Yakima. She lived both in Yakima and Selah for her entire life. She attended Selah schools and graduated from Selah High School. She attended Graceland College in Iowa before transferring to the University of Washington. She was perusing a degree in education but ended up leaving school due to illness.
In October 1955 she met the love of her life, Floyd Sharp, at Skateland Roller Rink in Union Gap. They were married on April 8, 1956. They remained together until Floyd’s passing in 2014. They were married for 58 years. You rarely ever saw one without the other!
The young couple settled in Yakima in the Fruitvale area. They eventually bought property in Selah and built the house that they would live in until Floyd’s passing. The home was constructed out of bricks that were once part of Carol’s elementary school. They spent many hours cleaning the bricks for their new home! The home was designed by Floyd and constructed by Carol’s uncle. They moved into their new home in 1963.
Carol and Floyd had 3 children. Laurie in 1958, Dale in 1960 and Judy in 1965. The family enjoyed camping and visiting Floyd’s family in Oregon. Most summers they would pack up the family and take their Travel Trailer on vacations to the Washington Cascades or the coast of Washington and Oregon. Like their own relationship, the family always stayed together creating many fond memories for their children.
Carol had several careers in her life. She was a homemaker when her children were young, sometimes working for her parents at their fruit warehouse in Selah. Later she would work at several insurance companies. In her later working years, she went to work at EPIC. She took computer classes and became an Apple and PC technician.
Carol was very creative and enjoyed many hobbies. She was a very talented seamstress, making clothes for her children and working on quilting projects. She also enjoyed cross stitching, tatting, and knitting. She spent many hours doing research into family genealogy and became a member of the Yakima Genealogy Society.
Carol is survived by her daughter Laurie Newberry (husband Steve), her daughter Judy Kilpatrick, her daughter in law Gladys Sharp, and the sister of her heart and cousin, Barbara Towner. Also, her grandchildren, Amanda Sharp, Laura (Sharp) Andrews and husband Mike, Christian Sharp, Sarah Newberry, Rose (Newberry) Van de Wetering and husband Miles, Kelli Kilpatrick, as well as 5 great grandchildren. Also, many cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Floyd and son Dale Sharp, parents Orville and Alice Melton, and brother Alan Melton.
