Donna L. Hubbard Scofield died on April 2nd, 2025, at home. The daughter of Ivan and Thelma (Covey) Hubbard, she was born Nov. 16, 1936 in the town of Nevada, Missouri, and moved to the West Coast with her family when she was four years old. She graduated from high school in Ridgefield, Washington, and attended Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, where she met her future husband, Russell D. Scofield. They were married in 1955, and in 1958 moved to Yakima, WA, where they raised their four children.
Donna worked for the Yakima School District for 28 years, serving as an elementary school secretary, office manager, curriculum and instruction secretary, and retired as secretary of student services. In all of her job locations, her wit and wry sense of humor made her an admired and valued teammate. She gave her full energy to every one of her endeavors. Donna was the published author of four books and numerous magazine short stories and poems, and was fourth place winner of the 1989 national short story contest held by "Country Woman" magazine. She very much enjoyed writing a humor column, “The Family Chuckle,” for the Yakima Herald Republic newspaper.
In addition to writing, Donna’s special interests were sewing, reading, baking, genealogy study, and traveling. She and Russ combined the latter two fields in a 2002 trip to the east coast, the southern states, and back home through the Midwest, tracing the roots of their ancestors. Choral music was another of her special enjoyments. She and Russ traveled to Portland and Seattle to hear men’s groups sing, and attended the International Choral Music Festival in Missoula, Montana every three years. Donna possessed an eager, inquisitive mind, and delved into study areas such as literature, history and archaeology for the sheer pleasure of gaining knowledge. She especially loved the holidays and spending time with her family, and created wonderful Christmas memories for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These little ones were the joys of her life.
From 1986 to 1993, Donna was active in AIDS support groups and was a public speaker for that cause. As an acknowledgment of her service she was named 1989 Volunteer of the Year for South Central Washington by the Washington State Hospital Association. She was a founding member of Care Bearers, providing support for people with HIV/AIDS, and served on the New Hope Clinic Advisory Board.
Donna is survived by her husband of 70 years, Russell D. Scofield; two daughters, Luanne Clark and Katrina Scofield of Yakima; son, Sheldon (Shawn) Scofield (wife Rebecca Howsmon) of Seattle; grandchildren Caitlen Clark Pietsch (Trevor) and Stephen Clark of Yakima and Jasper and Adria Scofield of Seattle; great-grandsons Roman and Oliver Pietsch of Yakima, brother S. Morris Hubbard of Spokane, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Matthew Scofield; mother and father; infant brother James; and her sister, Lois Jackson.
Donna will be greatly missed by those who enjoyed her kindness and wit, and lovingly remembered by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had deep feeling for a verse from “A Grandparent’s Prayer,” by Jane Craft:
“May they have the courage to follow their dreams, and should the day come when I am no longer on Earth with them, may they look back upon me with fond memories; and may they never forget that they were and always will be deeply loved by me.”
Peace be with you, beloved wife, mom, grandma and Gigi.
At Donna's request there will be no services. The family expresses great gratitude to the nurses and caretakers of the MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospice. You're the best!
