Eleanor was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 20, 1932 to Elvira Anderson Sarmiento and Vicente Laureta Sarmiento. The family moved to the Philippines after World War II. Eleanor returned to the United States in 1953 and settled in Yakima where she resided ever since.
In 1959 Eleanor married Harry Krueger. They were happily married for 51 years until he passed away in 2010. During their marriage both Eleanor and Harry worked very hard at their respective jobs so they could maintain their home and support their family. Eleanor’s dedication and work ethic won the respect of her employers and fellow employees at Garretson’s Market and then at Del Monte Cannery.
Eleanor especially enjoyed the company of her many friends, to entertain them at her home, to visit with them at parties and other functions, to play tennis or just enjoy a walk together. She also especially loved “retail therapy” and developed a very polished sense of style, which was reflected in her choice of clothes and jewelry and in her personal appearance. She and Harry also enjoyed traveling together on fishing trips and many extended vacations to Hawaii and Mexico.
Eleanor grew up in a very humble background and never forgot her early years of struggle and hardship. Throughout her long life she supported many causes to help the underprivileged and less fortunate.
In September 2016 Eleanor lost her baby sister, Jane Sarmiento Schwab, to cancer. This caused her great sorrow from which she never recovered. She is survived by her son Tom Krueger, daughter-in-law Crystal Evers and grandson Desmond Krueger of San Leandro, California, brother-in-law Michael Schwab of Seattle, nieces Lisa Schwab (Janet Adams Schwab) and Kristin Schwab (Kevin Harry), nephew Aaron Schwab of Los Angeles, California, great-niece Emma Harry and great-nephew Rezendes Schwab, and many other relatives and good friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to The Memorial Foundation/ Cottage in the Meadow.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Eleanor’s life on Saturday, August 5 at 1:00 pm at Keith & Keith Funeral Home in Yakima.
