She is survived by a sister Roberta Scott of Eugene, OR, and a sister-in-law Joan Quigley of Sisters, OR, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Chalmer G. Walters, who died on August 28, 1992, a brother Robert Quigley, a sister Marjorie Shirley and brother-in-law Don Shirley.
She answered to many names: the Quigleys called her Jane, Chalmer called her BJ or Betty Jane, and she signed her name Elizabeth J. Walters. Her parents Willie "Billie" Ruth McGee Quigley and Robert Crozier Quigley moved to Cottage Grove, Oregon, where her mother's family were pioneers in 1853. She graduated from Albany High School and then attended the University of Oregon where she graduated in 1941. Elizabeth worked in the public relations department of the Oregon Journal until her marriage in 1948.
These comments by three of the nieces express so well the sentiment we have for BJ: "Aunt Jane played a large role in the lives of her three nieces, the daughters of her sister Roberta (Quigley) Scott. They share many fond memories of her and Uncle Chalmer as they were growing up: watching the Polaroid photos magically develop; hearing the stories of exotic travels; hot summers in Yakima and Jane's homemade rhubarb pie; her beautiful flowers and the warnings about not drinking water from the garden hose. We watched intently as she brushed her long, silky hair and took "secret" walks with Chalmer after dinner. We wondered about their morning coffee ritual where they made it and drank it before joining us for breakfast. Aunt Jane's wise advisories, her interest in our lives and those of our cousins, her ready laugh - things we sorely miss already."
Those surviving are Joan Quigley (widow of Robert), Molly Scoggin (Thomas), Patrick Quigley (Sharon), Dan Quigley (Kathleen), Bryan Shirley (Marta), Jane Clements, Christopher Shirley (Ellen), laura Word (Jeffrey), Suzanne Sidman (Peter), Holly Kirby (David), Robbyn Scott (Mickey Mcleod), Nancy Pittenger (Donald), Richard Walters (Victoria), Mary Weyrick (Dean). She is also survived by many grand and great grand-nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers a memorial may be sent to living Care Healthcare Center, Memorial Hospital Hospice, or Yakima Arboretum.
A graveside service will be held at the Cedar Home Cemetery in Stanwood, WA on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Keith & Keith Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements
