1923 - 2022
It is with both sorrow and joy to share with you that our strong and courageous mother, grandmother and great grandmother completed her life journey on Friday morning 9/23/22. She was surely met by a host of family and friends. It all began on a day in May 1923. While she always celebrated her birthday on May 8th, we discovered her birth certificate revealed she was born on May 7th in Gary, Indiana to Andrew & Mary Martin, who immigrated here from Czechoslovakia to experience America as a family of 7. She began attending school without understanding or speaking the English language, and yet she excelled in both academics and athletics. While in high school, she won the girls all state high jump in track. After high school, Helen married George “Bud” Millet and together they raised a daughter Mary Ann and 4 sons, Allan, Fred, George and Richard.
During WWII she worked at a munitions factory, then for US Steel and finally at Edw. Levy & Co. Helen learned hard work from an early age, and she brought that gift into her growing family. She sometimes worked midnight shifts, then home to get kids fed and off to school, clean house, get dinner prepared and then nap until time to go back to work. In 1993, Helen moved to Yakima to be near her son Richard and family. This move began a new chapter in a life filled with family, new friends, new places to explore and new opportunities to volunteer. She was always kind and gentle but with a strength that guided her through 99 years of heartbreak and joy. She was the center of our family and will be greatly missed.
At 99, Helen lived to experience the losses of her husband George “Bud” Millet, son Fred Millet, parents, brothers, sisters, and a beloved niece, Millie. She is survived by her daughter Mary Ann (Fred) Lundquist, Florida, sons Allan Millet and George (Kathi) Millet, Indiana, Richard (DeeAnn) Millet, Yakima, and daughter in law Sharon Millet, Indiana. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Family will gather in Yakima for a time of remembrance and sharing. There will be a celebration of life with family and friends in Chesterton, Indiana in Spring 2023.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.keithandkeith.com for the Millet family.
