Lester’s parents moved the family to Wiley City in 1934 where he spent his childhood with his brother and three sisters. During his childhood Lester was on the track team and the wrestling team. He excelled at these sports and lettered in both. Lester attended Selah High School and graduated in 1948.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1949 and served for two years in El Paso, TX before being honorably discharged.
Lester met the love of his life Audrey Gess and the two were married on June 25, 1950 at First Baptist Church in Yakima. They were soon blessed with a son Bob and daughter Debby.
For the majority of his career Lester worked as a salesman for Boise Cascade, but his true passions were gardening, golf and pool. He loved working in his garden and planting beautiful flowers for him and Audrey to enjoy while sitting on their patio. Lester could also be counted on to work in his family’s gardens as well... even if they didn’t think it was quite necessary. He and Audrey also loved to travel together and were able to take many trips to places such as Washington DC; Branson, MO; San Antonio, TX; Reno, NV; and St. Thomas in the Caribbean.
Lester and Audrey were dedicated to their faith, and avid members of West Side (Baptist) Church in Yakima.
Lester is preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 63 years Audrey, his parents Casper and Martha, and sister Violet Flugge.
He is survived by son Bob Vetter of Yakima; daughter Debby (Mark) Russell of Gleed; grandchildren Nicole (Jason) Moore, Trish (Jim) Dvorak, Justin (Katie) Swale, Derek Vetter and Michael Vetter; great grandchildren Kaylee and Ty Moore, Carter and Kenadi Dvorak, and Bella Swale; as well as sisters Marlene Bonagofsky, Alice Burkhardt and brother Mel Vetter.
The family would like to especially thank the staff of Highgate House and Hospice for their care and compassion.
