God has received one of his beloved sons into glory on March 9, 2018. Paul Marvin Hayden left his mortal body at exactly age 95 and 1/2 to enjoy his immortal home in the heavens, where all four of his children look forward to being with him forever: Hope Jacobus, Seattle, 72; Mark Marvin Hayden, Harlingen, Texas, 70; Althea Fain, Ahtanum, 67; and Harmon Clifford Hayden, Kamloops, B.C., 65. He was an honorable man, well loved and admired by everyone he met. Everywhere and in all his dealings, he was unusually kind, honest, and thoughtful.
As a young man, he dedicated himself to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and loving his family. Though highly intelligent and educated, he worked even nights at menial jobs when necessary to support his family while pastoring small churches. In 1955, he was the first pastor of West Valley Nazarene Church with all of 10 members then. He went on to be assistant pastor with his brother-in-law, Gordon Jaffe, of 1st Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1958. Then he pastored the EUB church in Toppenish.
He started working for the state in his mid 30s as a social worker, then with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for the Nondisabled, then also the Disabled until his retirement at age 62. In the 1940’s, he began serving our country in the Army. He felt honored to continue his service in the National Guard, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as a Chaplain until retirement. During two summers, he drove his family to New York City where he attended chaplaincy school.
After the raising of his four children, the next wonderful chapter in his life was at age 50 when he married his beloved Margaret Green (Keller). They enjoyed the next 35 years of life together as best friends and business partners until her stroke in 2007.
Paul maintained an unusually active and healthy lifestyle physically, mentally, socially, politically, and spiritually due to his wise and moderate Christian lifestyle. Unfortunately, shortly after his 94th birthday, an unexplained injury occurred in his own garage on Summitview from which he was not able to recover fully. However, it was the joy and privilege of his four children to love and care for him at his daughter’s home in Ahtanum. There he consistently displayed unusual thankfulness, thoughtfulness, courage and integrity to his last breath. He enjoyed the reading of Scriptures and testimonies, singing and playing of hymns and the affection of family and friends to his finish line. Besides his four children, he is also survived by the mother of his children, Gloria Hayden, Ahtanum, and six grandchildren: October Vega, Florida; Robin Green, Ahtanum; Ezra Fain, Seattle; Ira Fain, San Diego; Caleb Jacobus, Seattle; and Charissa (Jacobus) Baumann, Seattle. He has six great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
