Born on August 22, 1945 in Great Falls, MT to Nels and Margaret (Graham) Nelson. He was raised by his sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Leroy Grassman. Bob attended elementary and high school in Great Falls before moving to Ogden, Utah where he graduated from Bonneville High School in 1964. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Vietnam War.
Married Marilyn (Hall) Nelson in Great Falls Dec. 14, 1968. They would have been married 56 years in December.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bob began his career with The Burlington Northern Railroad as a brakeman and engineer. He retired in 2002 after 44 years of service.
Bob was an avid softball player, played on many championship teams throughout Montana, retiring only when his body wouldn’t do what his mind told it to. Later he enjoyed riding his side-by-side, reading but especially attending his grandchildren’s sports activities.
Bob and Marilyn moved to Yakima, WA in 2004 to be closer to family.
Bob is survived by his wife, Marilyn, two daughters, Jori (Jasen) Moore, Erin Cusack, four grandchildren, Drew (Kendra) Cusack, Ashley (Andrew) Stenger, Kolbein Moore, Kendall Moore and great-grandchildren, Blair Stenger. Also survived by many nephews and nieces, best friend Jim Combs. Faithful companion, JAK.
He was a kind and generous man who was always willing to help anyone. He will always be remembered for his wonderful smile.
We want to thank all our family and friends that provided much needed support during this arduous journey. He will be forever in our hearts.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at the Yakima Elks Club, from 11:30 to 3:30. Lunch will be served.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Big Sky Bravery Org.
