Robert passed away in the early morning on December 28 at Panorama City’s Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Lacey, Washington. He was born in Yakima, Washington on March 25, 1924 to Frederick Otto Schweitzer and Agnes (More) Schweitzer.
Robert graduated from Yakima High School in 1943, and went on to earn his Private and Commercial Flying Licenses at his father’s business, Schweitzer Aircraft. He enlisted in the Army shortly thereafter, and conducted flight training for personnel both in person and on the Link Trainer, an early flight simulator developed by Link Aviation Devices, Inc. Robert worked for his father for several years after returning from service, then accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Administration. A major part of his job was checking and evaluating airport electronic equipment. Robert and another pilot flew a specially-equipped Douglas DC3 airplane across the United States to access and approve existing installations. After retiring from the FAA, Robert spent his time working on Amateur radio equipment, computers, and caring for his wife Violet, who was bedridden for six years before passing on.
He leaves behind a daughter, Kay, of Oregon, brother John Schweitzer (Evelyn) of Houston, Texas, and sister Maryjo Hamilton of Seattle, Washington, as well as several nieces and nephews. Robert’s wife of 60 years, Violet, predeceased Robert in 2009.
A special thank you is extended to Myrtle and Fielding Campbell, Robert’s kind neighbors and valued friends, who provided care and compassion during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
