Rory was born on November 8th, 1951, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Russel Eldredge Hackworth and Roma LaFaye Nuttall Hackworth. Rory spent most of his childhood growing up in Caldwell, Idaho with his parents and six siblings.
After attending Caldwell High School for 3 years, Rory enlisted and served in the United States Air Force from 1971 until 1992. After enlisting, he obtained his GED in 1972. Throughout his military service, Rory worked as an Avionic Communication Technician and was deployed overseas during Vietnam and Desert Storm conflicts.
Beyond his commitment to his country, Rory’s true passion was music. From his high school years through most of his adult life he played the bass guitar and sang backup vocals. His talent also extended to the technical side, where he would often work on his band’s sound system. His additional hobbies included building model airplanes and rockets, reading science fiction, watching movies, and spending time with family.
After retiring from the USAF, Rory relocated to Ephrata, Washington to spend time with his daughter and grandchildren. He was an attentive and loving grandfather and was a constant presence at school and sporting events, always ready to cheer his grandsons on.
Rory is predeceased by his precious daughter Tonya Rene; his father Russel “Pete” Hackworth; his mother “Fay” Hackworth; and brother Bryon.
He is survived by his daughter Mindy Johnston (John); grandchildren Shaun Harrington (Abby), Ryan Harrington, Brandon (Liz) Harrington, Josh Johnston, and Jenna Johnston; great-grandchildren Luke and Rosie; brothers and sisters Shelagh, Robb, Kelly (Randy), Molly (Matt) and Sean (Sheri); and numerous nieces and nephews.
