

illness. She was born in Fryeburg, Maine on October 18, 1936, the daughter of the late Lewis Herman
Decker and Mildred Josephine Bemis Decker of Yarmouth, Maine.
Alberta graduated as Salutatorian from North Yarmouth Academy in 1954. While in high school, she
was a delegate to Dirigo Girls State and wrote the high school news column for the local newspaper,
Talk of the Town, now The Notes.
Alberta attended Colby College and in 1956 left to be the war bride of Nelson B. Haynes of Stroudwater,
Maine. She was a Den Mother for the North Deering cub scouts, editor for the Jaycee Wives newsletter,
President of the Portland Ladies of Kiwanis (1968‐70), and President of the Woman’s Woodfords Club
(1976‐77). She became an avid duplicate bridge player winning the Maine State Championship in 1974.
She was the tournament coordinator for the Maine State Bridge Association (1975 ‐76) and the 54th Life
Master of the American Contract Bridge League in the State of Maine in 1980. She worked for
Mechanical Services and retired from Merrill Lynch in 2000.
Alberta loved to travel, visit Presidential Museums, and take bus trips with the Senior Centers of
Cumberland and Falmouth. She was an avid reader, belonging to book clubs for many years, enjoyed
playing dominos, and was Treasurer for the Cumberland Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Nelson, of Cumberland; her children ‐ Valerie Morton and
husband, Robb, of East Longmeadow, MA; Denton Haynes of Cumberland; Lincoln Haynes and wife,
Cindy, of Byron, IL; and Holly Day and husband, Thaddeus, of North Yarmouth; her grandchildren ‐ Sarah
Morton of Bentonville, AR; Rebecca (Morton) Ahmed and her husband, Alexander, of Maynard, MA;
Orion Haynes of Portland; Victoria Haynes of Colorado Springs, CO; Katelyn & Lauren Grobe of Byron, IL;
Alexandra Day of Fort Walton Beach, FL; Mitchell Day of Abilene, TX; and Madelyn Day of North
Yarmouth; her great grandchildren ‐ Finley Ahmed and Claire Ahmed of Maynard, MA.
