Yarmouth - David Lane Cook, 69, long time Yarmouth resident, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family, on October 8th at Gosnell House in Scarborough.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, he was active in his youth in various athletics, especially basketball, where his height made him a natural for the sport. He was a Boy Scout and loved opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, especially in Maine where he attended Camp Kingsley and visited with extended family in the Yarmouth area. Sailing and hiking were particular youthful passions he shared later in life with his own family. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Williams College in 1966, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team. He met and married Olis Ober Cook in 1968 after a brief courtship while working at IBM in Manhattan. Wanting to return to Maine, they moved here permanently to raise their family in 1970, living both in Yarmouth and Otisfield, where they purchased a blueberry and Christmas tree farm on 100 acres.
Dave cared deeply about the quality of life and instilling of character a Maine-lived life would provide his daughters. He took great pride in providing for his family in various ways, creating his own sales and marketing business and then real estate business after his decade-long tenure at IBM. He did this in order always to put his family first. He was also extremely interested and proud of his ancestral heritage beginning with English explorer, Captain James Cook. Locally, his family dates back to Captain Ebenezer Lane, who settled in Yarmouth in the late 19th century and whose descendants founded the Old Tavern Farm Dairy in the town proper. As a result, Dave celebrated his love of the sea and cherished his many family relationships in the state he called home.
His ex-wife, Olis Ober Cook, who, despite the difficult circumstances of Dave’s illness after their divorce, remained compassionately committed to his care and health in very meaningful ways, survives Dave. Three daughters, twins Katherine Cook Thomas of Yarmouth, Maine and Sarah Redfern Cook of Brea, California, and Kristina Cook London of Los Angeles, California also survive him. His five grandchildren, Julie, Jack, Carrie, Annie, and Sami will also miss him.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, October 10th at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth from 5 pm to 7 pm. A private graveside ceremony will be held at Riverside Cemetery the following day.
