Falmouth – Donald W. Stone passed away at home on April 18th, 2013 in Falmouth after a long illness. He was 91 years young. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nathalie; his children Jerry and Helen, Gary, Roseanna and Carol, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Donald was born in Milo, Maine to Anna Wilbur and Carroll Stone. He spent his summers growing up at his mother’s family farm in West Pembrook, where he developed his lifelong love of the outdoors. Somehow he always managed to find time for hunting, fishing and golf.
Donald graduated from the University of Maine at Orono, Husson College, Harvard and Bridgeport University. He continued his education the rest of his life, never ever hesitating to learn and master a new skill. He served his country in the US Army during WWII rising to Master Sgt.
After WWII, while working on Ripogenus Dam he made a trip to Bangor where he met and later married Nathalie Smart. They moved to Connecticut where he worked as an educator in the Fairfield School System until he retired in 1977. While there he held many positions, including Vice Principal, Athletic Director and Adult Education Director. Probably his most loved position was golf coach! He received an honor for Coach of the Year in 1972-73.
After they retired they returned to Maine where he sold real estate and managed property for several years before retiring again. Around this time they began spending their winters in Florida where he could pursue what his wife calls his ‘other love’: The love of the links. He managed a few “Holes-In-One” during his retirement and played many years all over Maine as a member of the Maine State Golf Association.
Family and friends are invited to remember Donald at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth on Friday, April 26th from 12-2 followed immediately by a burial service at Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth at 2:30 PM.
