

Frederick Reno Maitland (92) died peacefully at home in Cumberland, Maine, on March 23, 2025. He was born in Cohasset, Massachusetts to Frederick Maitland and Doris Adelaide Tobey. He is survived by his son Scott Gary Maitland of Hudson NH and his daughter Sharon Maitland of Ignacio CO, his step-daughter Anna-Lisa Hill-McDowell, her husband Kenneth McDowell and their son Lochlan McDowell of Amesbury MA and step-son William “Matt” Hill III and his partner Johnnie Bowles of Haltom City TX.
Frederick was drafted during the Korean Conflict and assigned to the 7th Army Signal Corps, Army of Occupation, Germany. In his senior years he was a member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
During his lifetime his work and hobbies varied. He was an Eagle Scout, boy scout leader, Past Master of Eastern Star in Billerica MA, a quilter and member of Pine Tree Quilters Guild where he took pictures of the quilts exhibited in the Maine Quilt Shows, a member of North Yarmouth Congregational Church, a master mason of the Thomas Talbot Blue Lodge of Billerica MA, St. John’s Lodge, Kora Shrine where he was a Chanter, and past president of the Cumberland County Shrine Club. He retired from Polaroid Corporation after which he worked for Bath Iron Works.
He and his Wife Beth Skillin Maitland belonged to the Colonial Craftsmen Club of Massachusetts and traveled the East Coast of the US and internationally to Canada and Europe performing the Masonic 3rd degree as it was done in 1775 while Beth was part of a colonial fashion show. On summer weekends they would do encampment at Fort Edgecomb in Edgecomb ME demonstrating colonial life in the early 1800s. Both Fred and Beth were docents at the Tate House Museum in Portland ME. Fred was president of the Federation of Maine Mineralogical Society. He was instrumental in obtaining the right for the Maine Mineralogical Society to go rockhounding in the Ham and Weeks Mine NH where beautiful specimens of beryl were found.
Beth and Fred enjoyed quilting and at the present time each has a piece of their work on display through April at the Cumberland ME town hall.Fred loved to sing. He greeted each day with a song. He enjoyed socializing with friends and acquaintances. He will be missed by many.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday April 19 at 2pm followed by a Masonic service at 3 pm at the West Cumberland Community Hall, 115 Blackstrap Road West Cumberland, ME. Interment in Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta will take place at a later date. All who knew Fred are welcome to gather in remembrance of his life. We hope you can join us in honoring his memory.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Springfield MA.
