Freeport - It is hard to believe that someone who was born in Beeville, Texas found his way all the way to Freeport, Maine, where he found his place in the world.
By the time he was 13 he had visited more countries than most people would see in a lifetime. His maternal grandparents took him on a trip, in connection with a World Veterinarian Meeting, where he had the opportunity to visit Greece, Rome, Italy, and while in Africa visited Egypt, Sudan, Kenya and Liberia where, to this day, he had many fond memories of this trip with his grandparents.
He had a thirst for knowledge that left most people wondering how he could pull so many factoids from memory to support his opinion on many subjects that would and could lead to several hours of debate with many of his friends.
His ability to speak to anyone and everyone led to many lasting friendships. His ability to walk into a room of strangers and leave with newly found friends was an amazing gift. Though it would drive his wife crazy as he would always say, “I will be right back” and after 20 minutes, he would finally arrive and simply say, “Sorry, started talking with so and so and lost track of time.”
He was a voracious reader. There wasn’t a time when he wasn’t reading and the book would be with him everywhere he went. When traveling, if he realized that his book was left behind, he would turn around and get the book, again, much to the frustration of his family.
He and his family moved to Maine only a few short years ago but within that time he touched the lives of many people within the Freeport community as a friend and through his coaching and volunteer work---Greg loved being with kids, especially his son. His work schedule allowed him to become a coach for his son’s lacrosse team and only recently became an assistant coach to his football team and helped with his son’s wrestling team. He could and would talk for hours on end on how the Freeport programs could and should grow for the coming years. Greg loved all sports and wanted to instill the love of the game, whichever season it may have been, into the children. His upmost goal was that the kids had fun, loved the sport and loved playing the game. He was extremely proud that his son was following in his footsteps for playing the same sports he had played when he was a child.
Greg is survived by his wife Robin; his son Garrison; his father Gayle Thompson and his wife Susan of MN; his mother Judith Downing and her husband Bud of MI; his brother Jeffrey Thompson and his wife Jackie and their daughter Caitlin of MI; his father and mother-in-law Bob and Moreen Burkholder of MI; his brother-in-law Mark Burkholder of MI; and large extended family and numerous friends.
In memory of Greg a Celebration of his life has been planned for Saturday, March 19th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., in their downstairs function room, at the Buck’s Naked B.B.Q., 568 Route 1, Freeport, ME. Food and refreshments will be provided --- Greg loved being with children so they are certainly invited. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to view a video collage of Greg’s life and to share your condolences, memories and tributes with his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Greg Thompson Athletic Scholarship Fund which has been established to help children who want to play sports but not be financially able to purchase the equipment. This fund will help those children pursue their desire to play. To help his son (Garrison) to pursue his dreams in sports and academics the Garrison Robert Thompson College Fund has been established to meet this desire. Contact Barbara Tuttle at Bath Savings Institution in Freeport to make those donations. Her contact number is 207-865-6998. Or mail the donation to: Bath Savings Institution, PO Box 160, Freeport, ME 04032.
