Yarmouth - Guy William Savage, 96 of Cousins Island, Yarmouth, died February 10, 2014 at his home.
He was born in Columbia Maine on October 27, 1917, a son of Gilford Farnsworth Savage and Lola Mae Wallace. Mr. Savage is a descendant of John Howland of the Mayflower, the Savages who settled in Woolwich Maine in 1728, the Wallace family who founded Harrington Maine in 1797 and Milbridge, Maine in 1848.
Mr. Savage graduated from Columbia Falls High School in 1936 where he was a star basketball and baseball athlete. After graduation he went to the Great Lakes to work as a seaman on freighters with his father and older brother Walter. On March 11, 1939 he married Pauline Lillian Clark of Machias. He was also employed in the lumber industry. At the outbreak of WWII he moved to South Portland to work at the Todd Shipyard. In 1945 he graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New London, CT and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy Reserves. After the war he worked in the plumbing and heating business in the Portland area with his brother Walter. In January 1947 he enlisted in the Maine State Police and was assigned to Troop B in Scarborough. In 1950 he transferred to Troop E and was assigned to patrol the western Penobscot County. In 1953 he was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to Troop A in Wells. In 1959 he was cited for bravery for saving the life of a wounded trooper in Limerick, Maine. In 1960 he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned command of Troop B in West Scarborough. In 1966 he was promoted to Captain and assigned as Director of the Departments Finance and Property Division. In 1968 he retired from the State Police and became the Director of fleet safety with the Merrill Transportation Company in Portland. In 1976 he became a toll collector with the Maine Turnpike Authority. He retired from the MTA in 1996 to care for his wife who had become seriously ill.
Mr. Savage was a member of the American Legion Post 91, 63 year member of Masonic Lodge, Penobscott #39 in Dexter, A 32nd degree Mason in the Valley of Portland and member of Kora Shrine, and past member of the Royal Guard. He was also a member of The Southern Maine Chapter of the Maine State Employees Assn. and was a member of the Woodfords Club in Portland and the Organization of Retired Maine State Police Officers. In 2002 he was awarded the title of "Legendary Trooper" by the Maine State Police.
He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years and a very dear friend Laurine Hebert, by his brothers Walter and Raymond, sisters Margaret Belyea, Edna Mae Savage, Jenny Ellen Bigger, Helen Marie Lydon and Lola Marie Ingersoll.
He is survived by his sons, Breen Reeves Savage, his wife Natalie of Kennebunk, and Merle Michael Savage, his wife Rebecca, of Augusta. Grandsons: Michael Todd Savage, his wife Kathleen, of Westborough, MA, Timothy Park Savage, of Saco. Granddaughter: Melissa Merilee Savage of Winthrop. Great grandchildren, Gavyn Reece Washburn, Duncan Ryan Washburn, Ian Reed Washburn, Collin Grant Tibbetts, Addison Grace Tibbetts, William Francis Savage, Kirsten Elizabeth Savage, Anna Natalie Savage, and Ashley Paige Savage.
Funeral services will be held on Friday February 28, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the First Parish Congregational Church, 116 Main St. Yarmouth. Mr. Savage will be interred beside his wife Pauline at the Cousins Island Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
