Freeport – Harland “Bud” Howard, 95, devoted father, grandfather, uncle, and friend passed from this life to the next on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at his home in Ocala, Florida surrounded by his family.
Bud was born on July 18, 1928 in Naples, Maine, a son of Albert and Harriet (Moore) Howard. He met the love of his life, Irma Gould Howard while attending high school together at Potter Academy in Sebago, they married just days after her graduation in 1948. Bud spent much of his life in the logging industry, starting his career at the early age of fifteen using cross-cut saws, axes and horses. In the early 1970’s he established Howard’s Pulp & Logging, and worked alongside each of his children and a few of his grandchildren over the years. With Bud’s strong work ethic and determination, Howard’s Pulp & Logging became a successful and well respected business in the community and beyond for decades.
Bud had a great love of the outdoors and was passionate about hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, and dancing. Bud and Irma enjoyed spending their nights square or round dancing with friends, their summers traveling in their camper visiting each of the states and also spending time as much time as they could with the family they built together. After retiring, Bud and Irma moved to Ocala, Florida where they enjoyed their final years. Bud was very active and could often be found gardening, in his shed working on his next woodworking project, “showing up all the young folk” at the gym or square and round dancing with various clubs. He was admired by almost everyone he met, and in his final days was awarded an honorary membership with the “Orange Blossom Squares”, that night’s dance being held in his honor. Bud had a kind and generous heart, always looking out for those he loved, especially his family who he loved dearly. His strength, determination and love was unparalleled and will be remembered by all. He will be missed by all who knew him, leaving them with fond memories they will cherish for a lifetime.
He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Irma Gould Howard; his grandsons, Christopher Michael Howard and Christopher Michael Austin; his three brothers, Richard Howard; Arthur Howard; John Howard; and his sister Mary Faulkner. Bud is survived by his three sons, James A. Howard of Lewiston; Stephen E. Howard of Utah; Michael A. Howard of Freeport; his daughter, Wendy M. Howard of Florida; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
