Hilda Leslie Farnham Barker, 94, of Yarmouth, died on Saturday July 13, 2013 in Freeport. She was born on June 25, 1919 in Bath, ME, a daughter of Marjorie (Arey) and Harold Farnham. She graduated from Gardiner High School, Class of 1936. She married Albert B. Barker, Jr. also, of Gardiner in 1940 and they moved to Chicago where Albert was serving in the Navy. They returned to Portland after the war and would eventually move to Yarmouth in 1956.
Hilda was very active in the First Baptist Church of Yarmouth, the Eastern Star - serving on the Board of Rainbow Girls and was a member of the Village Improvement Society. She was an office manager at Eastland Shoe, then Westland Shoe and retired from LL Bean in 1982 as a payroll manager. The Town of Yarmouth acquired 23 acres of land from Hilda that is now known as The Barker Preserve.
She enjoyed cross-stitching, knitting, reading inspirational books and playing Bingo. Hilda was always ready to go out and about on a moment’s notice. Some believe that between her and her good friend, Vera Kaulback, they knew every restaurant in the state of Maine. Hilda especially enjoyed spending time with her sisters and being “upta” camp at “Barker’s Bunkhouse”.
