1927-2018
BRUNSWICK – Jacqueline Mae Fossett, formerly of Cumberland Center, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2018. She was born August 31, 1927 in Bath, Maine to Perleston L. and Katherine M. Pert, the first of 5 siblings.
Jackie went to Bath schools and graduated with high honors from Morse High School in 1945. During WWII, when Bath was in a frenzy building ships for the US armed forces. She worked part-time in the office of the Hyde Windlass Co. of the Bath Iron Works. She also worked at several other Bath establishments including a bank and a jewelry store in the years right after the war.
In 1950 she married John W. Fossett of Pemaquid and moved to Portland where he worked for the Portland Press Herald. In 1956 they moved their growing family (John, 1951 and Betsy, 1953) to the quiet rural town of Cumberland where she remained until moving to the Dionne Commons assisted living facility in Brunswick in 2017.
Through the later 50s and early 60s she was primarily a great home maker and mom, also active in the Cumberland Congregational Church and the We Neighbors Club. A third child, Daniel, was born in 1959. In the mid-60s she returned to part time work, first as a bookkeeper for the Falmouth Pharmacy and then moved on to the banking world with the Federal Loan and Building Assn. and its several mergers into successor banks.
Jackie was an avid reader all of her life until her eyesight started failing, especially enjoying historical fiction and later, Civil War non-fiction. She also very much enjoyed the active exploits of her 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by the early death of her husband, John, at aged 61 in 1986 and later moved to the Cumberland Senior living complex off Tuttle Rd for several years where she enjoyed many old and new friends both from Cumberland and away. As she never had a driver’s license, she was always ready at a moment’s notice when an opportunity came up to go somewhere!
She was also predeceased by her parents and all four siblings; Catherine (Kay) Biette of Brunswick, Eunice Dow of Wiscasset, Perleston (Bub) Pert of Topsham and Edwin H. Pert of Georgetown.
She is survived by her son, John and wife, Bonnie of Hollis, her daughter Betsy and husband, Chris Birge of Liberty, and son, Dan and wife Beryl of Cumberland. Additionally, her grandchildren; Karen Dyer and husband Dale of Westbrook, Aimee Keithan, of York, England, Brent Converse and partner, Jana Fetterhoff , of Unity, Rebekah Bosco and husband Jason also of Unity, Dianne and Danielle Fossett both of Cumberland, Jack Fossett and wife, Shannon, of Saco and Karla Fossett of Portland and 7 great-grandchildren.
Friends and relatives are invited to a closed-casket visitation, 11AM-2PM, Saturday, Nov.17, at Lindquist Funeral Home in Yarmouth.
The family wishes to express its heart-felt thanks to the entire staff at Dionne Commons for their loving care of Mum during her final months and the same to the CHANS Hospice team during her final weeks.
