Joyce Iveney Ingalls, 92, July 18, 1924 – March 27, 2017 YARMOUTH, ME – Joyce Iveney “Joy” Ingalls, 92, of Yarmouth, passed away on March 27, 2017, peacefully as she slept. Joy was born in Eastport, Maine, on July 18, 1924, and graduated from Shead Memorial High School as Valedictorian at the age of 15, having skipped both kindergarten and the sixth grade. Joy graduated from the University of Maine as a member of the Class of 1943 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. She met her husband of 70+ years, Everett Palmer (“Joe”) Ingalls, while they were students at University of Maine. They married on Christmas Day, 1943, at Christ Episcopal Church in Eastport, Maine.
Joy raised four children and was heavily invested in their education – inside and outside the classroom. She communicated regularly with teachers, encouraged reading from an early age, and supplemented school work with additional projects. Throughout her life, in Maine, Connecticut and New York, Joy was a part-time teacher. For many years, she was also a ski instructor at Snow Ridge in Turin, NY, and at the age of 50, Joy competed in NASTAR ski racing and came in third in a national competition in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Joy and her husband Joe were both coaches for Maine Adaptive Skiing in their later years - well into their 80s- helping challenged skiers conquer the sport at Maine’s Sunday River Resort. Summers were spent at the family's camp in Perry, Maine, where Joy enjoyed golfing, waterskiing, boating, entertaining on the deck overlooking the lake, and passing all of those skills on to her children and grandchildren.
Throughout the years Joy hosted many get-togethers with friends, neighbors and family. One of her grandchildren summed it up, “You were an amazing Grandmother with a passion and vigor for life that was truly unparalleled. Thank you for sharing your love of Maine, skiing, pancakes and pie, and teaching us never to miss a cocktail hour!” A family friend echoed those sentiments saying, “There are so many happy memories of Joy that are dominated by her great attitude and desire to be positive. I thoroughly enjoyed cocktails and dinners at the Ingalls on many occasions. Joy was so welcoming and made me feel special in any situation.”
Joy was a loyal communicant of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Yarmouth. Her final days were spent at Bay Square Yarmouth where she received great care from the attentive, loving staff members.
Joy is survived by her son Everett P. “Terry” Ingalls III and daughter-in-law Susan W. Ingalls of Portland, her son K. Robert Ingalls of Tiburon, Calif., her daughter Virginia I. Peterson, and son-in-law Robert R. Peterson of Greenville, N.C., her daughter Jane I. Clabby and son-in-law Joseph E. Clabby of Charleston, S.C.; her five grandchildren, Abigail V. Ingalls, Robert S. Nixon Peterson, Carolyn I. Nadler, Anne C. Clabby and Robert W. Clabby; and one great grandchild John Robert “Jack” Nadler. Joy was predeceased by her husband, Everett P.
