She was born in a private hospital in Cumberland Center on June 18, 1935 and was brought home to the family farm in Falmouth when she was 3 days old. She was the daughter of Harold and Olga Aaskov, both the children of Danish immigrants. She was educated in Falmouth Schools and was a graduate of Falmouth High School. Subsequently she received an Associate Degree from Luther Bible Institute in Teaneck NJ.
She further studied four years at Augsburg College in Minneapolis MN, graduating with a B.A. in English. She then joined the staff of the Portland Public Library as a library assistant, later becoming Chief of Circulation for many years, and her final assignment was as a reference librarian. While at Portland Public Library, she spent summers at Syracuse University NY and was awarded a Master’s Degree in Library Science.
In 1973, she married Gerald Griffin. He was Chief of Technical Services at the Library. After 39 years of service, she retired from the library. June's brother Jack built their home on the land of the family farm in Falmouth, and a son Tom was born to them. Love of travel brought June to Denmark, Europe, Canada, Ireland, Greece, Egypt, California, and Alaska, and she took many day trips with her husband. Yet she loved being at home in Maine, busy in house and garden. She loved to play her piano and sing in the church choir. She loved her books, especially on travel, children's literature, local history, maritime history, lighthouses, and enjoyed old movies and musicals endlessly. She loved the family farm and all her relatives. She was a truly gentile, kind person, beloved by everybody.
She was predeceased by her brother Jack. She is survived by her husband Gerald; her son Tom; her granddaughters Vivi and Lucy; her grandson Patrick; her sister Ruth; her sister-in-law Monica; her nieces and nephews Heidi, Peter, and Kris, and grand nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on August 26, 2022, at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 265 Middle Rd. in Falmouth. Burial will follow at Blanchard Cemetery in Falmouth.
