Paul Edward Smith, age 82, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026.
Born on November 10, 1943, in Portland, Maine, Paul was the son of Edward and Kathleen Smith. He grew up shaped by the values of hard work, integrity, and family—qualities that would define his life.
Paul was predeceased by his loving wife, Candace White Smith; his son, Paul Smith Jr.; his parents; and his siblings, Chris Smith, Kathy Schidzig, Sheila McNabb, and Eddie Smith.
He graduated from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in South Portland in 1963, earning an associate’s degree in electronics. He began his career with CMP before joining IBM, where he worked for 30 years during a transformative era in technology. He concluded his career at Unum in the IT department, where he worked for 10 years before retiring.
Paul is survived by his son, Frank (Flordeliza) Smith; his daughter, Shelley (Craig) Moreshead; his stepchildren, Jim Morreale and Julia Morreale; and his cherished grandchildren, Kayleigh Smith, Jessica Moreshead, and Joshua Moreshead, and step-grandchildren, Amberlynn Esperanza and Kathyrine Esperanza. His family was his greatest pride and joy.
Paul and Candace shared a special life together filled with love, laughter, and animals. Their home in Freeport was a lively and welcoming place, where visitors were greeted by geese in the driveway, the neighing of horses, and enthusiastic dogs at the door. Together they enjoyed watching Jeopardy!, and Paul was a devoted fan of Judge Wapner and Judge Judy. He loved music and had a deep interest in history, especially World War II documentaries.
Paul had a kind heart and a gentle presence. He was always willing to listen, offer thoughtful advice, and provide comfort to those around him. He had a spiritual soul and a confident faith that helped guide and sustain him throughout his life.
He will be remembered for his wisdom, his quiet strength, and his unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
A private remembrance will be held by the family.
