Alma passed away peacefully at home on February 5, 2017 at the age of 93. The middle of the three Rubeo sisters, she was born August 28, 1923 in Yonkers, NY to Sadie (Casablanca) and Nazzareno Rubeo. Yonkers was her lifelong home. In addition to her parents, Alma is predeceased by her beloved husband of 40 years, Vincent DiBenedettto, and her sisters Mary Rubeo Cirillo and Velia Rubeo Apicella. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and great and great-great nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends. Alma attended Yonkers Public Schools and graduated from the Cochran School of Nursing in 1944. Later in life she earned a bachelor’s degree from Mercy College as well. She was an avid reader who could always be found with a book in her hand. She treasured her weekly visits to the Yonkers Public Library throughout her life. Alma was a registered nurse who worked for over 50 years at St. John’s Riverside Hospital. In her long career, she held many positions, but her last was as the Director of Home Care/Discharge Planning, a department she is credited with creating to ensure that her patients were prepared for success when they left the hospital. Anyone who worked at St. John’s during her tenure would know that “Alma D” was not easy to please. However, her commitment to her work and dedication to serving her patients’ needs were admired and appreciated by her colleagues and patients alike. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she will be sorely missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be in St. Anthony’s Church on Friday February 10th at 10am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
