Br. George J. McCloskey, O.F.M. Cap.

The Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of Br. George J. McCloskey, O.F.M. Cap.who passed away on Friday, September 8, 2017 at St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY at the age of 66. Br. George McCloskey, the son of George D. McCloskey and Jessie V. Harrower was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 18, 1950. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School, Brooklyn [1955-59]; St. Agatha School, Brooklyn [1959-64]; Xaverian High School, Brooklyn; [1964-68]; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn [1968-1972] graduating with a B.F.A. and again in [1973-75] graduating with a Masters in Art Education. Prior to entering the Capuchin Franciscans, Br. George served in the US Naval Reserve [1975-78]; worked as a high school teacher [1973-1988]; and a commercial artist [1981-83] at JC Penny. Br. George was invested as a Capuchin on August 24, 1983 in Garrison, NY. He began his initial formation at St. Anthony Friary, Hudson, NH [1984-86]; St. John the Baptist, NYC [1986-1988]; and Our Lady Queen of Angels [1988]. He pronounced his perpetual vows on August 26, 1989. For the rest of his ministerial life, Br. George resided at St. John the Baptist Friary, 210 W. 31st St., NYC where he ministered in the Province of St. Mary, Office of Communications [1988-1993] and the Capuchin Mission Association [1993-present]. He was temporarily transferred to St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY to attend to his on-going health issues. Br. George was survived by three sisters: Eileen McCloskey-Lupo of Brooklyn; Kathy McCloskey-Lamonica of Brooklyn and Joanne McCloskey-Jackson of Lake Hopatcong, NJ and a cousin Jim McCloskey. Viewing will be held at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, New York on Tuesday, September 12, 2017from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY at 11:00 a.m. followed by Interment at the Province of St. Mary Cemetery, Yonkers, New York.
