F. Norman Dannen, beloved son of Frederic A. and Frances L. Dannen, passed away peacefully on March 10, surrounded by his loving family. He was 100. Norman was born in Hackensack, NJ, and graduated from Dwight Morrow High School where he excelled in academics, tennis, and football. Norman was a graduate of the Whyte School of Photography, the American Institute of Banking, and the Brown University Graduate School of Banking. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle who was admired and cherished by all. Norman was employed by Dry Dock Savings Bank in New York City for forty-five years. He retired in 1981 as the Senior Vice President of Banking Floor Operations. While there, he met and married the love of his life, Margaret McCormack Dannen, in 1947, beginning a 70-year journey together that resulted in three wonderful sons and seven adored grandchildren. From 1941-1945, Norman served in the US Army Signal Corp as a 1st Master Sergeant and Official Army Photographer. He was responsible for the photographic lab that supported General Douglas McArthur throughout the Pacific campaign. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to his employment at Dry Dock. In 1950, Norman and Margaret moved to Hastings-on-Hudson, where they raised their three sons. They were active in the spiritual, social, and educational life of St. Matthews Roman Catholic Parish. Norman was a true Renaissance man, as comfortable with a spreadsheet as with a mason’s trowel and imparted his wide-ranging knowledge to his children. As an only child, he knew the value of family and loved the time he spent with them as well as with his extended family, wherever they might gather. Some of his happiest memories were of family vacations at the Jersey Shore, swimming in the ocean and walking on the boardwalk in the evening.
Norman is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret, and children, Norm Jr., his wife, Cynthia and children Laura, Laura’s husband Greg, and Norm III, John, his wife Mary and children Michael, James, and Nicole, and Christopher, his wife Theresa and their children Christopher and Lisa, and by his devoted brother-in-law, John McCormack, and sister-in-law, Florence McCormack, and his loving nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Matthews R.C. Church, 616 Warburton Ave, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706, on Saturday, March 18, at 10:00am. Visitation will take place at the Whalen and Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., Yonkers, NY 10703, from 4:00-8:00pm on Friday, March 17. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norman’s name to St. Matthew’s R.C. Church or Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY. Internment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hastings.
