

Francis Joseph Glavin the son of Francis P. and Ellen C. McShane Glavin was born in Wollaston, MA in June 4, 1929. The Glavin family attended St. Ann Church, Wollaston, MA where Francis was baptized on June 25, 1929. He attended St. Mark School [1935-42]; Boston Latin, Boston, MA [1942-1946] and MIT, Cambridge, MA [1946-47].
Francis entered the Capuchin Province of Great Britain on October 2, 1947 at the Capuchin Friary in Milton, MA receiving the named “Leonard”. He pronounced his first vows on October 3, 1948 and began his philosophy studies at Capuchin College, Washington DC [1951-1952] where he pronounced his solemn vows on October 3, 1951. Fr. Leonard requested to join the newly-established Province of St. Mary and was accepted on April 1, 1952.
Fr. Leonard continued his studies at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, NY until 1955. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Marian Year on June 26, 1954 at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY.
Father attended the Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome and received his PhD in 1956 and his Licentiate in Philosophy in 1958. He would later return to Rome and receive his Ph.D. in the Philosophy of Science [1961]; Master of Arts, Gannon University, Erie PA [1980] and participated in advanced graduate research at Marian University [Rome] and International Marian Research Institute [Dayton, OH].
Fr. Leonard began a 30 year teaching career at St. Anthony College Friary, Hudson, NH as lector in philosophy [1958-1970] and later [1977-1995] at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Worthington, OH.
Father also ministered on the preaching band and resided at St. Joseph Friary, Fultonville, NY [1970-72] and St. Fidelis Friary, Interlaken, NY [1972-74].
Fr. Leonard offered parochial ministry at St. John the Baptist Church, NYC from 1974-1977 and again before his retirement, from 1995-2014. He temporarily resided at St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY in 2014 and was transferred to Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, NJ on August 15, 2014 where he peacefully died on February 8, 2016.
Fr. Leonard was survived by his brother, Fr. Patrick Glavin, O.F.M. Cap. and his sister, Sr. Ellen Glavin, S.N.D.de.N., retired professor at Emmanuel College, Boston, MA and many loving friends.
A wake and prayer service will be held at Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, NJ on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. A wake will also be held at St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY on Friday, February 12, 2016 [2-4:00 p.m. and 7-9:00 p.m.] A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703 at 11:00 a.m.
