
The Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of their brother, Fr. Philip Francis Bohan, O.F.M. Cap., who died on April 10, 2020, at St. Clare Friary, Yonkers at the age of 78.
Philip was the first of ten children born to Eugene and Margaret Carrigan- Bohan on April 16, 1941. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, Bronx, NY [1947-1951]; St. Clement, Pope Elementary School, So. Ozone Park, NY [1951-1955]; and St. Mary Glenclyffe HS, Garrison, NY [1955-1959]. Philip entered the Capuchin Franciscans on August 31, 1959, at St. Lawrence Friary, Milton, MA. He attended St. Anthony College, Hudson, NH [1960-64], where he completed a B.A. in Philosophy. He pronounced his perpetual vows on September 1, 1963. Fr. Philip completed his theological studies at the Capuchin Theological Seminary, Garrison, NY [1964-68]. He was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend Joseph M. Pernicone, Auxiliary Bishop of New York on November 11, 1967, at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, Yonkers, NY 10703. Following his ordination, Fr. Philip was assigned to St. Francis Chapel, Springfield, MA [1968-1970], where is served as an assistant and began his ministry in the Spanish apostolate. He would serve as an associate pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows, NYC [1972-1978]; St. Michael, Brooklyn, NY [1978-1984]; Sacred Heart, Yonkers, NY [1987-1993]; St. Joseph the Worker, E. Patchogue, NY [2002-2008]; and Good Shepherd, NYC [2008-2014]. Fr. Philip received an M.S. Ed [Counseling Psychology] from St. John University, Queens, NY, and served in the Family Consultation Services, Archdiocese of NY [1980-1996].
Fr. Philip served as pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows, NYC [1984-1987]; Our Lady Queen of Angels, NYC [1993-1997]; and St. Michael, Brooklyn, NY [1997-2002]. Fr. Philip was survived by Eugene and Ellen Bohan; Eileen and Patrick Browne; Michael and Mercy (deceased) Bohan; James Bohan; Margaret and Paul Eraclio, Thomas and Talia Bohan; Christopher and Dina Bohan; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
