Georgia (Mattson) Kaschel was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York to Napoleon and Helen (Sackett) Mattson. Georgia grew up on Villard Avenue in Hastings in a home her father built. She had three older brothers: Reginald, Napoleon, and John. As the only girl, her father built her a playhouse in the back yard, and when she reminisced about her childhood, she would speak of it fondly. In 1940, as a 9-year-old girl, she began attending Bethany Gospel Chapel in Yonkers, New York. Georgia came to know the Lord as her personal Savior while she was young and was faithful to Him throughout her life. Her life evidenced a great interest in the work of the Gospel, as she prayed for many missionaries and gave to support the work of missions.
It was at Bethany Chapel where Georgia met the love of her life, Paul Kaschel, while singing in the choir. Paul was a Korean War Veteran who served in the intelligence services of the U.S.
Army. The two were married in October 1959 and lived in Yonkers, enjoying 41 years of marriage and serving the Lord together, visiting assemblies and conferences on the east coast.
After their marriage, they were in regular fellowship at the White Plains Gospel Chapel following the closing of the Mt. Vernon Christian Assembly which had been near their home. They also fellowshipped at Bethany Gospel Chapel. Paul’s gift of a Hammond organ allowed her to practice at home and play the same organ model at Bethany. Over the years, Georgia played the piano at the White Plains Chapel on Sunday and again at Bethany on Tuesday for their weekly Bible study and prayer meeting. Paul was often asked to sing solos with Georgia accompanying him on the piano.
Georgia was a legal secretary for Exxon, for many years. She and Paul commuted into the city together by Metro North every week for years. Georgia was an avid reader, especially books about animals. She loved music and had a keen sense of fashion, always looking very pulled together.
She and Paul were frequent and gracious hosts as is witnessed by the many signatures in their volumes of guest books. She loved playing games with her guests. Georgia also had an “extended family” with many neighbors and other believers nearby.
Paul was called home to be with the Lord in 2000. Georgia remained in Yonkers until she moved to an independent-living apartment at Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, New Jersey in 2017. She did this to be near family. Here she was able to enjoy several months at the same complex with her brother Nap, until his passing in 2019.
After a brief illness, Georgia went home to be with the Lord on January 7, 2025. Georgia was a well-loved daughter, sister, wife, aunt, and friend. She will be sorely missed by her nephews and nieces and by her friends and church family.
Visiting hours for Georgia will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave, Yonkers, NY 10703. Funeral service will take place in the funeral home on Saturday, February 15, 2025 from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM. Final disposition is private.
