On September 9, 2021, Mary Elizabeth Dunn (Mullaly) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Mary was born on October 21, 1930, in Queens, NY to Louis and Mary Elizabeth Mullaly. She was one of five children - Eileen, James, Patricia who all predeceased her and John who survives her. On January 5, 1957, Mary married the love of her life, Thomas. Tom and Mary were married for more than 62 years until his death in December 2019. Mary was also the mother of five children - Thomas (Maureen), Marybeth, James (Beth), Nora (who predeceased her) and Catherine (Pete). She was also the cherished grandmother of five - Shannon (Mier), Thomas, Brendan, Caitlin, and Conor and a great grandmother to Ryan and Madison Muller. Mary was a mother and grandmother figure to her extended family in so many ways. She always looked forward to family events and occasions. Whether it was a graduation or birthday, she never missed a chance to spend time with her family.
Prior to her marriage, Mary worked in the advertising field in New York City subsequently leaving that career behind her to guide and nurture her growing family. She returned to work in 1977 as an administrator for the Anesthesiology Department at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, NY. Upon her retirement, Mary began her new role as grandmother — a vocation she truly loved. Whether it was vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard, Florida, Rhode Island or just spending time in the backyard, nothing made Mary happier than spending time with her family.
To know Mary was to see a person with quiet strength and resiliency. She never had an unkind word for someone but was rather a voice of reason and assurance, a person with compassion and advice. During her life, Mary encountered health challenges but faced them in her own quiet determined way. She never complained or allowed them to prevent her from traveling or missing time with her family or friends. While her family and friends will miss her voice and presence dearly, she has left behind a path and a legacy that will continue with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those we love don’t go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.
Finally, Mary’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at St. John’s Riverside Hospital for the kindness and compassion shown to her and her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY. Interment from 12:45 PM to 1:00 PM at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 W Stevens Avenue, Hawthorne, NY.
